GIS Day #Hack4Her: Empowered by Innovation

November 18, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

To commemorate this year’s GIS day on 18th November 2020, Women in GIS Kenya (WiGISKe) in collaboration with Women in GIS Uganda seek to facilitate collaboration to create and develop technology-based solutions that will work in the context of Africa’s unique circumstances and challenges. We are bringing together gender advocates/experts, policymakers, tech communities and like-minded individuals to celebrate digital solutions that address issues affecting women and girls in Africa.

Unfortunately, technology has been underused in unlocking women’s economic opportunities or solving some of the most pressing issues affecting them. Although we are witnessing exponential growth in technological changes and innovations across all industries, there still exists a large technology gap between men and women according to the Women and the Web Alliance, a public-private partnership that is teaching digital literacy to women in rural Kenya. It is only by addressing the gender gap that will lead to women benefitting from the opportunities that technology and the web hold.

The question that needs to be asked is: HOw will this revolution will lead to ending issues directly affecting women such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Reproductive and Maternal Healthcare, New Born and Child Health (RMNCH) (among others); which dirrectly affect women?

The event dubbed #Hack4Her will have technical presentations highlighting noble and innovative ways communities, organizations and individuals are innovating new solutions to bridge gender gaps.
